Enrollment in Transfer Edge does not include medical or other types of insurance. Academic Courses

By taking classes in the summer, students have the opportunity to acclimate to the expectations of UC Irvine coursework and begin completing major courses and/or general education requirements before the fall quarter begins. Smaller classes during Summer Session also means more one-on-one time with professors or TA’s!
University Studies 196 (required for Transfer Edge)
The 2-unit course is designed to help you make a successful transition to the University of California, Irvine, and develop strategies that will enhance your University experience. Through lectures, discussion, course assignments, and special events, you will learn about campus resources and programs that support your transition and enhance your academic development.

You will also be introduced to the social sciences and the research university – specifically the UC system and UC Irvine. You will explore what research looks like across various disciplines in the modern research university. The course will also provide you with an opportunity to practice the many skills, such as engaging with a professor, necessary for becoming a successful student, researcher, or practitioner!

University Studies 196 meets during Session II only.

Additional Courses
The number of additional courses you take will vary on how many sessions you attend (Session I, Session II, or Full Summer). Most courses are 4 units. Enrollment in 6-8 units reflects a full course load in a single summer session. Remember, Transfer Edge takes place during Summer Session II only but students are welcome and encouraged to take courses during Session I if they wish to maximize their earned units and cost savings through pay for 8.

There are over 800 different courses offered during Summer Sessions I, II, and the 10-week session.

Please visit our Courses page to search for other available courses. We recommend that you exercise care in selecting your additional courses.

Consider the following ways to make use of Summer Session:
We suggest you enroll in coursework that you are certain will fulfill your graduation requirements.

Complete prerequisites for courses that you plan to take during the year.

Take a course that does not relate to your chosen field but looks interesting – summer at UCI is a time of possibility: take a course that was not available at your previous school or one that you will not have time for during the year!

Transfer Edge is only available in Summer Session II.
You can choose to take advantage of the “Pay for Only 8” Incentive Program by enrolling in Summer Session I. Enrollment in Full Summer allows students to complete an entire quarter of coursework before fall quarter begins. For example, in Session I, you might enroll in one elective course (typically 4 units). In Summer Session II, you would enroll in University Studies 196 (2 units) and one elective course (typically 4 units).
Transfer Edge: International Students
International students must enroll in the number of units and types of instruction that satisfy the requirements of their student visa. Please work directly with UCI Admissions and the UCI International Center to ensure you meet the requirements of your visa.

As an international student participating in Transfer Edge International student, you will enroll in University Studies 196 (2-units) with other Transfer Edge students, and an elective course(s)of your choice.

Academic Advising
To ensure that you are adequately prepared for the course(s) that you enroll in, and that you are not duplicating credits you have already completed at the school you are transferring from, we recommend you attend your school-specific summer advising program, typically held in June or July. You will receive information about these sessions directly from the school to which you have been accepted.

While you may have already enrolled in Transfer Edge, you can discuss your enrollments at this session and, if needed, make changes to your courses prior to the Summer Session deadline for course changes. If you contact your school directly, be sure to clarify that you are enrolling in Summer Session courses with the Transfer Edge program.

Academic & Transfer Student Support
To ensure academic success, all Transfer students taking courses with Summer Session will have access to the UCI Learning and Academic Resource Center (LARC) and the Transfer Student Center. At LARC, students will find many useful academic resources including study skills workshops and small-group academic assistance. Individual tutoring may also be available to students for a small fee.

The Transfer Student Center is a “Home Away from Home” on campus which provides specialized workshops, a space to interact with staff advisors and fellow undergraduate transfer students, and an environment to discuss any issues or share transfer experiences. The Transfer Student Center also provides amenities such as free coffee, refrigerator space, and student snacks, making it a comfortable environment to study and meet others. (Please note some of these services are currently suspended in light of public health guidelines).

As part of Student Success Initiatives (SSI) the Summer Edge counselors and mentors are please to offer Transfer Boost during Session I. Learn more
