Freshman Edge
The deadline for enrollment is July 14.
Submit your enrollment through the Online Enrollment Form . If you are unable to enroll with your UCInetID, please use the Alternate Login option to create an account.
Freshman Edge International
At this time, we are accepting international students participating in Edge from their home country. The enrollment deadline is July 14.
Summer Bridge
Submit your Summer Bridge Application online here. The application deadline is May 24, 2021. Students who are awarded a scholarship will be sent instructions on how and when to enroll in Freshman Edge using their scholarship award. Visit the Summer Bridge Application as soon as possible to review the application process which has additional steps.
Step 7: Register for New Student Orientation
All incoming Freshman are required to attend SPOP. Students who receive a fall quarter advising assignment for August may contact our team in an attempt to avoid conflicts with their summer coursework. We cannot guarantee you will be rescheduled. Home | UCI Orientation.
Step 8 - Health Insurance
Enrollment in Freshman Edge does not include medical or other types of insurance. Students may enroll in the Voluntary Student Health Insurance Plan (UC SHIP) for the program dates of early August through late September. Students who will not be covered during the program by a major medical health insurance should strongly consider enrolling in Voluntary UC SHIP.
More information on UC SHIP is also available.
Please note that all registered UCI students are automatically enrolled, beginning their first fall quarter (fall 2021), in the University of California Student Health Insurance Plan (UC SHIP) in fall, winter, spring and summer terms. While the UC SHIP fee will be included in your fall 2021 registration fees, it is not included in your preceding summer 2021 registration fees.

Freshman Edge
Eligibility
All new freshmen with a U.S. High School Diploma.
If you are a U.S. student entering UCI in fall 2021, then the Freshman Edge pathway is likely your best fit! You will be part of a small, highly-motivated group of incoming students, and will have an opportunity to become familiar with the academic rigor and social scene of UCI under ideal conditions of maximum opportunity and support.
Freshman Edge International
Eligibility
All international students entering UCI in fall 2021.
If you are an incoming international undergraduate student at the University of California, Irvine, you are invited to take part in Freshman Edge International, an opportunity that will provide you with a rich linguistic, academic, social, and personal foundation for the next four years. The program is designed to support the unique needs of students new to the United States as well as to provide the opportunity to build relationships with all of their UCI peers.
Visa Considerations
If you need an F-1 visa to study at UC Irvine, your I-20 documentation will be processed by the UCI International Center. The start date of your I-20 can be changed to your summer start date once your Freshman Edge International enrollment form and payment are received and processed by our office. Follow the instructions given in your UCI Admissions correspondence. It is the student’s responsibility to complete the necessary steps to obtain a visa with UC Irvine.
Summer Bridge
Eligibility
Students who meet at least one of the criteria below are eligible to apply:
- Income eligible (as federally established and determined from your 2020-2021 FAFSA or 2020-2021 CA Dream Act)
- Students from disadvantaged backgrounds/circumstances
UCI Student Success Initiatives (SSI) also offers a limited number of Summer Bridge Scholarships to eligible students for a version of the Freshman Edge program that is supplemented with additional support services requires year long participation. Summer Bridge is a 6 week academic and residential pathway offered under the umbrella of the Freshman Edge Program.
Mandatory Campus Fee
Summer Bridge Scholarship applicants must submit payment for the non-refundable mandatory campus fee on their Summer Bridge enrollment form upon acceptance of the scholarship to hold their space in the program and courses. Remaining fees and expenses will be funded by the Summer Bridge Scholarship, based on student financial need. Upon completion of Summer Bridge, the mandatory campus fee will be reimbursed to students as a final portion of the scholarship.
Academic Courses by Pathway
Enrollment in 6-8 units reflects a full course load in Summer Session. There are different academic offerings depending on the Freshman Edge pathway that you choose:
- Course: University Studies 83 (2 units)
- Course: Choose a pre-approved course for your major.
- Course: University Studies 84 (4 units)
- Course: Academic English 22B (2 units)
- Course: University Studies 84 (4 units)
- Course: LPS/HIS 60 (4 units)
University Studies 83 & 84 (All pathways)
The course is designed to help first-year students make a successful transition to the University of California, Irvine and develop strategies that will enhance their University experience. Through lectures, discussions, and course assignments and activities, students will learn about campus resources and programs that support students’ transition and enhance their academic development, and will develop a personal action plan to guide their career at UCI.
Academic English 22B: Reading and Vocabulary (International pathway only)
You will learn to speak and understand English with more confidence through extensive reading and discussion with emphasis on journal articles, textbook chapters, note-taking, and the interpretation of charts, diagrams, tables, and figures. Pass/Not Pass only.
This course meets Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 2:00pm to 2:50pm.
Logic & Philosophy of Science 60/History 60 (Summer Bridge pathway only)
The Making of Modern Science examines developments in science and mathematics since the Scientific Revolution, and investigates their significance for contemporary philosophical debates about current scientific theories. (fulfills one GE IV course.)
This course meets Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1:00pm to 3:50pm. The discussion section for this course meets Tuesdays or Thursdays from 4:00pm to 4:50pm.

Things to Know Before you Apply
- Review all of the information on the Summer Bridge Application webpage – there are additional steps to take.
- Each year the deadline to apply is in late May.
- Students who plan on attending Freshman Edge even if a Summer Bridge Scholarship is not awarded, should also enroll in Freshman Edge to save their space in the program and receive the best chances at a space in their desired course.
- Students who plan on NOT attending Freshman Edge if they do not receive a Scholarship should wait to enroll until they are instructed to do so.
- Summer Bridge Scholarship applicants will be notified of their scholarship award status on a rolling bases as early as mid-May through early July.
- Summer Bridge Scholarship applicants must submit payment for only the non-refundable mandatory campus fee ($184 in 2021) with their Summer Bridge enrollment form upon acceptance of the scholarship to hold their space in the program and courses. Upon completion of Summer Bridge, the campus fee will be reimbursed to students as a final portion of the scholarship.
